This article is taken from Fairyland's favourite newspaper, "The Midnight Messenger". It is written by a magical fairy journalist called Eleanor Quickwing, who set out to interview Santa's chief elf, Mr Likesalist in the run up to Christmas.

The Midnight Messenger: November 2006
Christmas is Coming!
We've sent Eleanor Quickwing off to the North Pole this winter, to find out Santa's news…
Mr Likesalist, chief elf of Christmas House, pauses from ticking off the long list of children's names who are getting presents this year, sighs, and looking as though a good night's sleep is something he hasn't had since August, tells me the latest news from Christmas House.

Well, it's been chaos as usual” he mutters, stirring a cup of snowdrop tea. “Elves rushing here, there and everywhere, making presents, wrapping presents, guarding them from the goblins who try and steal them in the night.”

He offeres me a moonbeam biscuit, but I refuse, I've had food given to me from the moment I set foot in this house - even when I first knocked on the door an elf answered it with a tray of freshly baked mince pies. If I eat any more I shan't be able to fly home! Mr Likesalist puts the plate back down on his desk, takes a biscuit himself and nibbles it in a worried sort of way.

I wait for a moment, wishing he'd get on with it. I have half an eye on the window - outside it is thick with snow. Of course, it's always snowing here and lots of people think it's very pretty, but I am more of a sunshine fairy and I have never liked the cold. I shiver inawardly as I watch the fat snowflakes falling to the ground and decide that I will definitely take a fairy taxi home.

For a moment, Mr Likesalist seems to shiver too, but I don't think he is bothered by the snow. He carries on talking, with a worried frown:
"They've been worse than ever - the goblins I mean - and this year we've had to employ an abominable snowman, just to keep them at bay. Trouble is that we've had to keep the storerooms as cold as ice so that he doesn't melt and he's also eating all the chocolate ice cream in the house because it's the only thing he likes. Some of the elves have been getting a bit annoyed by this, as chocolate ice cream is one of their favourite foods too. Fortunately, I've ordered in ten tonnes of mince pie ice cream, (which they like even more), to be delivered ready for Christmas Day. The abominable snowman will have gone home to his ice-cave by then, so at least they'll have something to look forward to.

"As for Santa," he goes on, taking a long swig of tea, "I've hardly seen him, he's been so busy this year. He's out with the reindeer at the moment, on a trial flight above the clouds. They like to get out every week in the run up to Christmas, just to make sure they're all fit enough for the long trip around the world."

The elf picks up his pen again and ticks another name. "Well, I'm afraid that's about all the time I can give you," he tells me, "must get on with this list." I stand up and shake his hand. He smiles. "Oh, and do stop by the living room on your way out," he says with a wink, "Santa has left you an early Christmas present there, under the tree."

And that's the thing I love about Father Christmas, I think to myself as I flutter out of the door... no matter how busy he is, he always finds time to give a present to everyone, even a grumpy old fairy like me!
